The yurt takes it name from the famous Mongolian tents, which do without the use of a central supporting pole.  In Australia this basic home design has been adapted by Goulburn Yurtworks to provide a wide range of granny flats, studios, playrooms, weekenders, music rooms and even entire family homes suitable for the Australian climate.

Mike Shepherd, the proprietor of Goulburn Yurtworks, started building his versatile yurts back in the 1980's and has found a small but steadily growing market for these practical and stylish structures all around Australia.

Mike's yurts are designed so that the weight of the roof pushes down on the self supporting 360 degree walls, which are in turn stabilised by a tension cable.  This design means his yurt has a very flexible floor plan. They are also excellent as pole-houses on difficult steeply-sloping or rocky sites.

The yurts are designed around a circular unit available in single and two story designs and any number of annexes can be added.

Goulburn Yurtworks can:

-- provide a bare skeleton of the Yurt for Owner-builders  to assemble and finish,   or

-- provide and assemble that skeleton on foundations  for Owner-builders  to finish,   or

-- provide the entire structure clad, so that all the Owner-builder has to do is erect the pre-fabricated pieces on site,   or

-- construct the whole yurt completely for you, start to finish,

whichever suits  your requirements and budget.

The yurt takes only takes a few days to erect and is easy to dismantle if you want to move to another property and take your yurt with you!

All yurts are council approved throughout Australia.
